Seneca, S.C. – YouthLink is pleased to announce it will receive a $10,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to expand its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) Academy in South Carolina.
YouthLink STEM Academy brings social, educational, and employment components together to create a comprehensive, out-of-school experience for underserved youth in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM Academy incorporates years of professional experience with research-informed concepts and evidence-based best practices to create an intuitive approach to STEM education.
Programming includes problem-based learning in math and science, robotics, FIRST LEGO League, hands-on science experiments, and features leadership development, financial literacy for young adults, social development through group projects, and 1:1 iPad usage for student projects and research. The STEM Academy’s exploratory, supportive and flexible setting allows students to learn in different ways and equips them with the skills they need to thrive in a future of growing complexity.
“YouthLink is happy to have the support of the Duke Energy Foundation as we continue to facilitate opportunities of academic growth among our youth,” said Dr. Charlie Shaw, YouthLink STEM Director. “We will continue to explore the wide variety of STEM initiatives within our community.”
YouthLink provides its STEM Academy at no cost to its participants and will use the Duke Energy Foundation grant to connect students with high-quality STEM, out-of-school time programming and opportunities to build social competencies that will prepare each student for academic success in high school and to excel in rapidly growing computer programming, science, technology, and engineering fields. The grant will help YouthLink support existing STEM Academy programming in seven South Carolina counties – Oconee, Pickens, Anderson, Sumter, Lee, Clarendon, and Williamsburg.
YouthLink is empowering youth in South Carolina by engaging them in programs designed to build and enhance their roles as active and responsible citizens within their communities.
